Many companies face significant challenges in implementing effective and compliant lockout/tagout programs, especially those related to locking.
OSHA has special regulations to protect employees from accidental power-on or startup of machines and equipment.
OSHA’s Standard 1910.147 1 Outlines guidelines for hazardous energy control, commonly referred to as the “Lockout/Tagout Standard,” which requires employers to “develop plans and use procedures to ensure appropriate lockout/ Tagout equipment to prevent employee injury.” The program is mandatory not only for COMPLIANCE with OSHA, but also for the overall protection and benefits of employees.
Understanding the OSHAlockout/ Tagout standard is important, especially since it is consistently listed as one of OSHA’s top 10 annual violations. According to a report published by OSHA2 last year, the confinement order/listing standard was ranked as the fourth most frequently cited violation in 2019, with 2,975 violations reported.
Not only can violations result in fines that can potentially affect a company’s profitability, but OSHA estimates that proper compliance with lockout/ Tagout standards prevents more than 120 deaths and more than 50,000 injuries each year.
While it is important to have an effective and compliant lockout/tagout program in place, many companies face significant challenges in achieving this goal, especially those related to lock-in.
According to research based on field experience and first-hand conversations with thousands of customers in the United States, less than 10 percent of employers have an effective closure plan that meets all or most of the compliance requirements. About 60% of U.S. companies have addressed the main issue of locking standards, but in limited ways. Worryingly, about 30% of companies are currently not planning major closures.
