Application of LOTO scheme
Primary, secondary, stored or separate energy sources are locked down for service and maintenance.
Service and maintenance:
Repair, preventive maintenance, improvement and installation activities of machinery, equipment, processes and wiring. These activities require the equipment, process or circuit, or its components, to be in a “zero-energy state.”
Personnel performing these activities must use Lockout/ Tagout according to protocol. Alternative methods should be used when Lockout/tagout of machines, equipment, processes and lines is not available.
This standard applies to, but is not limited to, activities performed on a machine, equipment, process or circuit.

Alternatives are available when the following situations occur
LOTO is not feasible
The work is routine, repetitive, and integrated into the production process
No Lockout/tagout is required for minor modifications and adjustments, assembly, opening, part positioning, or cleaning of tools if none of the following conditions exist.
Bypass or move shields or safety devices
Displace any body part in the operating area of a machine, device, process or circuit
No LOTO alternatives are scheduled for the task
Mission-specific training is not provided
