Alternatives may be used if:
LOTO is not feasible
The work behavior is routine, repetitive, and integrated with the production process.
Slight modification and adjustment of tools, assembly, opening, parts;
No LOTO alternatives are scheduled for the task;
No task-specific training is provided.
Application of LOTO scheme
Primary, secondary, stored or separate energy sources should be locked for service or maintenance
Service or maintenance:
Repair, preventive maintenance, improvement and installation activities of machinery, equipment, processes and wiring. These activities require a machine, device, process, or route, or part thereof, to be in a “zero-energy state.” Personnel performing these activities must use Lockout/tagout in accordance with the protocol.
When Lockout/tagout for machines, devices, processes, and wires cannot be used, alternative methods should be used.
This standard applies to, but is not limited to, activities performed on a machine, equipment, process or circuit.
