Electrical locking
Hydraulic and pneumatic potential energy – set valve in closed position and lock in place. Slowly open the relief valve to release energy. Some procedures of pneumatic energy control may require the pressure relief valve to be locked in the open position. Hydraulic power processes, such as lifting devices, may require blocking.
Hydraulic and pneumatic latches
Mechanical potential energy – Carefully releasing energy from a spring that may still be compressed. If this is not feasible, if there is a possibility that the spring can transfer energy, blocking the parts that might move.
Gravitational potential energy – Use safety blocks or pins to prevent parts of the system from falling or moving.
Chemical energy – Locate chemical supply line to system, close and lock valve. Where possible, drain lines and/or cap ends remove chemicals from the system.
For more types of energy, see hazardous Energy Control program.
