Lock and Lockout tag all hazardous energy sources, for example, physically insulating energy sources from the source with a hand-operated circuit breaker or line valve.
Control or release residual energy
Residual energy is usually not apparent, stored energy can cause injury by causing equipment to move unintentionally, lowering suspended parts, blocking moving parts, venting pressurized air from the gas pipe, venting water pressure to reduce pressure, and releasing or blocking spring energy.
Verify energy isolation
Do not assume anything, test to confirm that the machine is under control, there is no movement, no light is on, visually check that all moving parts are stable, switch control to off position after test, this step can only be done by authorized staff and is invalid in judgment of anyone other than the person doing LOTO verification.
Make sure locks are enforced
If you need to remove the Lockout tagout to test the device, be sure to restore the lock before making any further adjustments, no matter how small they may seem. Always restore the machine to a fully safe state before your body part enters the danger zone.
