Lockout, Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used to ensure that hazardous machinery or equipment is properly shut down and cannot be started again until maintenance or repair work has been completed. A case may involve industrial machinery requiring repair or maintenance. For example, suppose a large hydraulic press requires maintenance work. Authorized personnel will follow LOTO procedures to ensure that the press is shut down and disconnected from its power source. A locking device will be applied to the power supply of the press to prevent accidental activation when performing maintenance work. Once the job is complete, authorized personnel will remove the locking mechanism and perform a safety check to ensure everything is secure and ready to use again. Serious accident or injury could result if LOTO procedures are not followed correctly. That is why every time maintenance work is carried out on machinery or equipment, it is imperative to ensure that the LOTO procedure is fully understood and followed.
