Modified – 6 step locking (originally 7 step)
1. Prepare to shut down
Understand the power and danger
Know how to control danger
2. Shut down the device
Strict adherence to procedures
Check the manufacturer’s instructions
Push all the stop buttons
3. Isolation equipment
Cut off all power
Disconnect or isolate auxiliary power sources
4. Install the Lockout/ Tagout device in the following locations:
Circuit breaker
The valve
All other energy isolation equipment group lock
Multiple employees operate the same equipment
Lock each device for each employee
Special procedures or lockboxes may be required
5. Control stored energy
Release, disconnect, and suppress residual hazardous energy
6. Check the isolation of equipment. Carefully check:

Energy isolation
Lockout/tagout
Stored energy is controlled to alert employees to equipment testing
Evacuate all personnel from the work area
The device under test
Restore the start button to the closed position
Modified – Removed locks and tags (original step 7)
Check whether the equipment can be in good condition and normal operation
Take away tools and unnecessary items
Inform all affected employees
Clear work area • Remove locks/tags
Each employee removed his or her own lock
Sign and return signs to remind affected employees that the equipment is ready for operation
