Overview of the Lockout/ Tagout process: 9 steps

Step 1: Identify the energy source
Identify all energy supply equipment (including potential energy, electrical circuits, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, spring energy,…) Through physical inspection, combine drawings and equipment manuals or review a preexisting equipment specific Lockout Tagout test procedure.
Collect necessary isolation control devices

Step 2: Notify affected employees
Notify all affected employees and other employees that lockout-tagout-test procedures will be performed

Step 3: Turn off the device
After shutdown, operate all energy isolators to ensure complete disconnection of equipment power source
Turn the electrical separator to the “off” position, disconnect the circuit breaker, remove the safety core, and close the necessary valves (manually or automatically)
Safety interlock and emergency stop switch cannot be used to stop equipment normally

Step 4: Confirm quarantine
After shutdown, operate all energy isolators to ensure complete disconnection of equipment power source
Turn the electrical separator to the “off” position, disconnect the circuit breaker, remove the safety core, and close the necessary valves (manually or automatically)
Step 5: LOTO the device
Lockout tagout at each isolation point
Use and complete the lockout-Tagout-test LOTO checklist
Lockout-tagout-test” checklist must be completed, including single or multi-point locking, SOP is up to date, lock department and employee signature, department, date, before starting work
Each person working on the equipment must attach his/her personal lock to a single isolation point or collective lock box.

Step 6: Release residual energy and confirm complete release: LOTO release residual energy and confirm
Use such safety pins (palletizer, packing machine) to isolate the energy of the lift
Lower portions that may be raised to equilibrium or isolation
Isolate movable parts
Isolate or release spring energy (palletizer, baler)
Reduce system pressure (air, steam, CO2…) , empty the liquid or gas line pressure
Emptying liquid
Exhaust gases (air, steam, CO2…)
System natural cooling
Release electrical energy (laser)
Stop the speed wheel from spinning
Etc… other
Part seven: Test confirmation
Verify the effectiveness of LOTO before any work begins
Execute normal startup procedure or confirm zero power status
After confirmation, return to the Closed state

Step 8: Work normally
Avoid potential device activation during work
The current LOTO can be interrupted, but when work needs to continue, the entire LOTO program must be restarted

Step 9: Remove LOTO
Remove all used equipment and tools from the work area (each employee should remove their personal security locks and tags when the work is done. No employee is allowed to remove locks and safety tags that do not belong to him.
Return machine protection or safety device to proper position
Remove all LOTO tools in the correct way
Notify all affected or other employees that LOTO has ended
Perform a visual inspection before restarting to ensure the area is clean and fit for startup
Follow all safety start procedures before turning on power

LOTO execution has the following four modes: single point, multi-point, single point, multi-point.
